Postcards From a Rock and Roll Tour is drummer Gordon Marshall's witty and wry take on life on the road touring with legendary rock band The Moody Blues. Part memoir, part travelogue, it is a candid, unexpected, and often hilarious account of just what it's like to travel around the world playing to sell-out audiences, living out of a suitcase, and spending days and days on a tour bus. If you thought being in a rock band was all sex, drugs, and rock and roll, then think again.
Postcards from a Rock and Roll Tour (Audible Audio Edition) Gordy Marshall Splendid Books Books
First the pros of this book:It's funny. Gordy is a very good writer. He's very observant and has a great memory. I loved the parts when he talks about the "goof ups" like when he steps in mud with his brand new tennis shoes. Gets to meet Brad Pitt at a filming in Las Vegas, waves to a ship passing by behind him as the Moodies play on stage. These were great stories and very entertaining. The book is that, very entertaining, but...
The Cons:
If you want this to read funny stories about the Moodies back stage or some silly tidbits about touring with the iconic band, then this is not your book. There is very little concerning the other Moody Blues members other than Gordy and Graeme talking about what movies to watch on the bus.
In staying that, it is a good travel book. Gordy goes into wonderful detail of the places he visits while on tour. He is not afraid to explore the different cities, tells a few tales about his family, my favorite being is when his daughter sat in on the drums during a warm up and Justin Hayward didn't see her and they played together. Can you imagine Justin looking back at the drums and seeing this little girl playing? Pretty cool huh?? Just wish there was more of that, and pictures... like a lot of books like this, it lacks pictures. Only a couple of Gordy at the drums.
Being a Moody Blues fan I still enjoyed it, but not what I thought it would be.

Postcards from a Rock and Roll Tour (Audible Audio Edition) Gordy Marshall Splendid Books Books Reviews
I've bought several copies of this book for musician friends because it's the perfect example of stories from the road. Gordy Marshall is probably the most erudite rock drummer out there, and his writing is colorful and builds to a great comic punch over and over in his book. I cracked up laughing throughout the whole thing! Loved it and hope for Postcards II soon, then it'll be "lovely to see you again my friend" as the Moody Blues song goes.
Gordy Marshall is one of the best drummers in the business today. Have you ever wondered what it is like to tour with a band as famous as the Moody Blues? Gordy has a wonderful voice and articulates with humor and insight in his "Postcards from a Rock and Roll Tour. I looked forward to every postcard, and hated for them to end. I felt like I was right there with the band. I recommend this highly.
The Moody Blues are one of the most influential, beloved and respected bands in the history of rock and roll. Drummer Gordy Marshall takes the reader on a almost 'virtual tour' , sharing stories and experiences as the drum partner of Graeme Edge (who writes a wonderful foreword to the book). Marshall's writing style is fluid, casual, funny and inviting. He has a knack of making the reader feel that he or she is along for the ride..either in transit, in the hotel, in the studio or on the stage! 'Postcards' is a special treat not only for fans of the Moody Blues but for any rock and roll fan who has wondered what it's like to be on tour with one of the greatest bands in music history. I highly recommend this book and hope that you can also catch Gordy behind the kit at a Moodies show when they come to your town!
I love this book. Great addition to my collection of items pertaining to this band. and, of course, I love rock band drummers anyway. Provides some great laughs from events from Gordon Marshall's point of view. Can hope there will be more books like this.
This book takes you on tour as seen through the eyes of a drummer as if you were there with him. I've enjoyed reading Gordy's interpretaion of the various places he visited. The book also takes you into some of the ups and downs of doing city to city touring with a band.
I recommend this book for any curiosity seeker into the daily expectations of a major tour. It's for any person who is a fan of the Moody Blues and Gordy Marshall.
I learned of "Postcards From a Rock & Roll Tour" from the recent Moody Blues Cruise and though I was thoroughly taking advantage of the warm tropical air and abundant frozen libations, adorned with tiny umbrellas, was lucid enough to take note of the title. I'm so glad I did! Upon my return, I downloaded the book to my kindle and have spent the past few weeks savoring tales of the “glamorous” Rock & Roll lifestyle. I especially liked the helpful shower tips and will keep them in mind when next I travel. Mr. Marshall has a delightful and easy flowing writing style that entertains the reader from the first postcard to the end of the tour. I admit I did feel a twinge of melancholy to see it conclude. I highly recommend this entertaining and enlightening book to any and all Moody Blues fans or anyone who wants to know what it's like on the road.
Imagine how thrilled I was to discover that a book had been written by the drummer of the Moody Blues! On second thought, don't imagine. Read the book.
Postcards from a Rock & Roll Tour is a delightful account of the 2010 Moody Blues tour of the U.S. and Canada. I usually find the British take on the U.S. to be amusing, and Gordy does not disappoint. From Chicago to Birmingham we follow the band as it performs, and as Gordy attempts to make sense of the New World. There are the usual problems - and the not so usual. (Gordy getting his butt stuck in a hi-hat is not the kind of normal problem one encounters while on stage.)
If you are a fan, you will love this book. If you are not, you will become one.
